David Beckham ends 6-year L.A. Galaxy career on high

David Beckham ended his stateside playing career lifting the MLS Cup for L A Galaxy. According to the legend after the match, that was the goal the team set itself at the start of the season. Job done, then, Becks?

Mm, maybe, maybe not. Reading the report on Yahoo! (my own fault, really) raises serious questions about whether the yanks know, understand or even want 'soccer'. It's feckin' football - that pansified game you play covered head to toe in body armour is rugby for wimps!

Anyway, some of the defamatory comments posted by complete and utter tossers make you wonder whether UK women understand such nuances as the offside rule in more depth than they. Even Liverpool fans acknowledged David Beckham's contribution to football. Americans, for the majority, just don't get it.

David Beckham and Robbie Keane over-qualified for MLS

Keano got on the score sheet with an injury-time penalty to seal the victory that clinched the cup for L.A. Galaxy over an outclassed Houston Dynamo. The honour would surely have gone to David Beckham had the manager not already substituted him so that Becks could receive the standing ovation he truly deserved.

Reading the report of the game, though, it must have been frustrating for the Republic of Ireland and England legends. Let's just drop in a couple of quotes so that we get a better understanding of why the MLS perhaps wouldn't even compete in the Scottish Third Division:
Beckham found Keane...with a sweeping cross-field ball, but Donovan contrived to put the square ball from the Irishman wide from nine-yards out...

...Mike Magee managed to escape the attention of a gaggle of Houston defenders only to head a Beckham free-kick down and then over the bar from three yards out

Keano makes sure Becks leaves at the top of the game

And it was Robbie himself who ensured that David Beckham would end his six years at L.A. Galaxy with a second successive championship trophy.

Two minutes from time, The Dynamo almost got level but their leading all-time goalscorer Brian Ching saw his effort fizz past the wrong side of the post.

L.A. Galaxy then released Robbie Keane who sprung the offside trap successfully this time, already having had one goal ruled out by the linesman's flag. He broke into the box, invited the foul from Dynamo's Hall and promptly converted the resultant penalty.

Whilst the Americans bemoan the fact that David Beckham has made a lot of money in America, raising his public profile too, they cannot seem to see the global interest he brought to the MLS.

With comments on the Yahoo thread like "The media are trying hard to make him a hero" and "a career all about the money nothing else..." it's obvious the U.S. neither understands why nor deserve the best soccer players to go play there.

Let 'em stick to the 'World Series', instead. The irony says it all.

Have your say: He's scored a few important goals for Man Utd, L.A. Galaxy and England old Becks in his time. What's your favourite David Beckham moment from the last twenty years?
